The six jewel rivers of Japan were subjects of classical poetry. The rivers were located in six different provinces. Prints of the series ‘Furyu Mutamagawa’ were popular amongst Edo printmakers. Here we see Utamaro’s masterful skill at imbuing the ladies with expression and character.
