A high ranking courtesan (oiran) and her young attendants wear matching kimono exquisitely decorated with fans and cherry blossom. Utamaro was based in Edo and the image is probably for a series of prints produced c.1789-1804 featuring courtesans from the Yoshiwara pleasure district.
