The generals depicted in this series of prints were leaders in the Kawanakajima campaign of 1553-64. One of the generals, Kakizaki Kageige, is illustrated slicing the tip off of a wooden shield (tate). At a time of peace, Kuniyoshi drew inspiration from historical literature for his musha-e prints.
