The Sambaso dance derived from Noh theatre and was traditionally performed in Kabuki theatre to open the new season of performances. The ritual lively dance was short and was designed to purify the performance area. The sambaso dancer is identified by the tall hat with two red ‘sun’ discs and is often shown with hand bells called ‘suzu’.
