Sasaki Ganryu was a famous Samurai swordsman. He was famously defeated by Musashi. It is chronicled that he was defeated with a long sword carved from a boat oar. The wooden blade was longer than that of Ganryu’s sword and thus Musashi was beyond his reach. Ganryu was killed by being struck over the head with the heavy wooden blade.
