Chiryu was famous for being an area to see Japanese iris in the Spring. In the Summer, horse fairs were common at the station. In 1832, Hiroshige was invited to join the Tokugawa Shogunate on their journey to Kyoto. Hiroshige produced many drawings as he travelled the Tokaido Way, which informed the designs for this series.
