Gakutei was a pupil of Hokusai. Known to the West as a print artist, in Japan he is foremost remembered as a poet and writer. He incorporated his own comical poetry, known as ‘kyoka’, into privately commissioned prints. The courtesans are pictured on the Nakanocho, the Main Street that ran through the Yoshiwara district.
