The romantic setting of Mont St Michel monastery in Normandy has inspired artists and authors alike for centuries. When Goodwin visited, it would have been surrounded by water at high tide, becoming a peninsular at low tide, enabling access by foot.
Goodwin skilfully uses the tinted paper to give form to the dramatic granite Gothic structure. The use of red and orange in the lamp and skyline draw the eye through the composition and provide an accent to the darker colours used.
