The licensed pleasure quarters to the north of Edo were known as the Yoshiwara. Each year when the cherry blossoms (sakura) bloom, the Japanese celebrate life and death in a festival known as ‘hanami’. Here, courtesans and attendants enjoy the sight along the ‘Nakanomachi’, the main road through the Yoshiwara, by moonlight.
