We want your visit to be straightforward, enjoyable and well-organised.
Here’s everything you need to know before you arrive.
When booking, please include:
- Preferred date and arrival time
- Group size and year group
- Type of visit (workshop, self-guided, virtual)
- Any access or SEND requirements.
Once your visit is confirmed, we’ll send:
- Booking confirmation
- Teacher notes (where available)
- Any relevant resources
If you’re planning a self-guided visit, you can download activities in advance.
We open at 10am, please arrive a few minutes before this time and wait in the gated courtyard at the front of the museum.
When you arrive:
- A member of the team will meet your group
- You’ll be shown where to store coats and bags
- We’ll give a short welcome and outline the visit
If you are running late, please contact us so we can adjust where possible.
To help your visit run smoothly:
- Groups should stay together and be supervised at all times
- We may ask groups to move through spaces in a particular order
- Some areas may be in use by other visitors or school groups
Our team will advise you on the day.
Your visit may include:
- A led workshop session
- Time to explore the galleries
- A self-guided activity
Students are encouraged to engage with objects, ask questions and take part in activities.
Teachers and accompanying adults remain responsible for their group at all times.
We recommend:
- Early Years: 1 adult to 3 children
- KS1: 1 adult to 5 children
- KS2: 1 adult to 6 children
- KS3 and above: 1 adult to 15 students.
We recommend these ratios to ensure all children are safe and have full access to the activities on offer. Some workshops require children to be in smaller groups to complete tasks, and having an adult with each group ensures maximum participation opportunities for all children.
We want everyone to have a positive experience.
To support this:
- Students should stay with their group
- Objects should only be handled when invited
- Displays should be treated with care
- Bags should be stored in designated areas
- Food and drink should only be consumed in agreed spaces.
If your group is staying for lunch:
- Please let us know when booking
- We will advise on suitable spaces
- Outdoor areas may be used when available
- Toilets are available on site
- Space will be provided for coats and bags
- Drinking water is available
We aim to make visits as inclusive as possible.
If your group has:
- Access requirements
- Additional needs
- Specific support requests
Please let us know when booking so we can plan your visit accordingly.
Schools are responsible for completing their own risk assessments.
If you need additional information, we’re happy to provide it.
