Farleys and the Lee Miller Archives Celebrate 75th Anniversary

75 years ago, photographer Lee Miller and curator Roland Penrose moved to a Farmhouse in Sussex. From 1949 Miller and Penrose filled Farleys, their home in East Sussex with an unparalleled collection of contemporary art and were visited by some of the key figures in 20th Century art world.  Many were personal friends, amongst them Picasso, Dorothea Tanning and Max Ernst.

Farleys and the Lee Miller Archives (LMA) are delighted to announce the celebration of their 75th anniversary throughout 2024. As part of this milestone, Farleys will be hosting themed workshops, special events, and collaborating with museums and galleries across the UK and Ireland.

Maidstone Museum is delighted to have been chosen to display two images by Lee Miller connecting her time in Egypt with our Egyptian collections found in the Ancient Lives gallery.

BIOGRAPHIES

Lee Miller (1907-1977)

Born in Poughkeepsie, New York, Miller began her photographic career as a top fashion model for American Vogue and Vanity Fair. In 1929 she became the assistant of the Surrealist photographer Man Ray in Paris before founding her own studio there and, later, in New York. Her Surrealist images along with her fashion work, portraiture and extraordinary Second World War reportage photography have earned her a key place in the history of art and major events of the last century.

Roland Penrose (1900-1984)

A Surrealist artist and disruptor of the art establishment, Penrose was known for his biographies of Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, Man Ray, Antoni Tàpies. Penrose is remembered for his ‘First International Surrealist Exhibition’ of 1936 which marked the beginning of British Surrealism. He co-founded the ICA with Herbert Read and was curator of the Tate’s highly acclaimed Picasso exhibition in 1960. In 1966 Penrose was knighted for his service to visual arts.
