This view shows Goodwin’s skill at leading the eye through a composition, a talent he admired in Turner’s work. The old bridge over the Reuss River cuts across the centre of the picture. The sweeping line from the left takes your eye up and through the warmth of the sun on the horizon.

With a simplistic palette of soft colours, Goodwin has captured the romantic setting of the Renaissance Cathedral of St Leodegar seen to the right of the painting.
