The embossed marks on the print have been produced by a blind printing process known as karazuri. On the white sections of the kimono and beneath the flecked background they add depth to the image. The effect was produced by rubbing a dry woodblock (han) onto the paper (hosho). This print is the right side of a diptych, the left sheet shows Prince Genji.
