Hastings was a favourite destination for painting and Goodwin would travel there by bike from his home in Bexhill. He wrote in his diary in 1911: “I find that old subjects have new interest by treatment, otherwise the work would be very vain repetitions…I may not be of necessity dwelling too much on one theme, when that theme is within a 10-mile radius of Bexhill, and all the variety that may be found within it.”
