This view shows Hastings Old Town with All Saints Church and East Hill to the left. This early study on board mirrors the composition for a large oil painting of Hastings dated 1892, which also features in the collections of Maidstone Museum.
A comment in the 1896 Fine Art Society exhibition catalogue notes that Goodwin’s first painting ground was Hastings. He admired the Old Town for its picturesque qualities, and in later life would regularly cycle to the town from his home in Bexhill.
