Goodwin concentrated on painting allegorical, topographical and landscape pictures. If figures were used, they were typically shown from behind and used to lead the eye through a composition.

In 1913, he jokingly decided to set his New Year’s resolution to concentrate on figure drawing, with a view that if he failed, he always had his landscape work to fall back on.
